Chandigarh: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is executing a three-phase plan to upgrade operational facilities at the Chandigarh airport that includes installation of better navigational aids and a restructured runway. The plan, expected to complete by mid-2019, would permit unrestricted day and night operations by all categories of aircraft from this defence airfield that is also increasingly used by civilian operators.
The first phase, which is under way, involves improvement of 7,200 feet of bitumen surface of the runway by laying eight separate layers of dense asphaltic concrete. This activity is presently being undertaken at night and on Sundays and is expected to be complete this month, after which longer day operating hours will be available for flights operations.
The runway will be closed from May 12-31 for laying the top layer of the bitumen surface. While there will be no civilian flights during this period, IAF aircraft will be relocated to alternative airbases in the region to continue their operational tasks.
Chandigarh primarily houses transport aircraft responsible for air maintenance of the northern sector and other communication duties.
