Cabinet approves Guwahati airport revamp

Guwahati/New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Wednesday approved the proposed Rs 1,383 crore new international terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International airport here, giving a push to the Centre's ambition of making it the hub of transport with Asean countries.

The committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also gave its nod to a Rs 2,467-crore expansion plan for Chennai airport and a Rs 1,232 crore new terminal for Lucknow airport.

Completion of the 1,02,500 square metre terminal building here will take the airport's annual capacity to handle passengers (old and new terminals) to nine million. The foundation stone of the new terminal was laid on January 28.

"The new terminal building will cater to the requirement of passenger growth up to the year 2026-27. This will encourage investment and tourism in the Northeast with thrust on Act East policy," said an official statement.

A source in the Airports Authority of India said the new building would be able to handle 3,100 passengers during peak hours. The new terminal building was necessitated as the existing one of 16,800 square metres has saturated. It handled 3.8 million passengers in 2016-17, 36 per cent more than in the previous year, against its design capacity of 3.5 million passengers per annum. The airport currently handles 796 flights per week, covering domestic and international destinations.

The new terminal building will have 64 check-in counters, 20 self check-in kiosks, eight immigration counters, eight customs counters, six arrival carousels, 10 aerobridges, 10 escalators, one travelator, 25 elevators, 20 aircraft parking bays and 16 self-baggage counters, among others.

Official sources said the construction of the new terminal building is likely to transform Guwahati into a business hub as the capitals of at least eight nations are situated within 2,000km from here.

"The Centre is giving emphasis on improving air, water, rail and road communication to revive the communication links the Northeast enjoyed with neighbouring countries like (present day) Bangladesh and Myanmar before Independence. The new terminal is a step in this direction as airline companies like Air Asia and Spicejet want to make LGBI airport a hub of their operations with Asean countries," the source said. After the cabinet meeting, civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted: "It (the new terminal) will give a major thrust to our Act East policy and to tourism in NE India".
