Cabs to cash in on airport closure to boost business

Mohali: As the Chandigarh International Airport closes for runway repair for a 20-day period from Saturday, fliers would have to make alternative travel plans.
With the nearest airport in the Northern region at a distance of at least 225 kms (Amritsar or Delhi) from the city, local air passengers opting for a connecting flight to domestic and international destinations would be relying on Volvo bus services, trains and private cabs to reach the airport.
The Chandigarh International Airport, which has an average traffic of 4,200 passengers a day, at present operates 28 flights, including three international flights to Dubai, Sharjah and Bangkok.
Over one third flights are connected to Delhi, carrying an average load of 750-800 passengers a day.
Harneet Singh, a private taxi owner, said the demand for taxis between Delhi and Chandigarh was expected to surge by 20-25 per cent during the interim closure period.
“Considering the peak demand in the tourist season, the Volvo bus service can accommodate limited passengers. Trains terminate at a certain distance from the airport. Hence, people travelling with luggage usually prefer to hire cabs,” he said.
