CCEA okays upgradation of integrated terminals at Chennai airport

Chennai: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, gave its approval for expansion and upgradation of integrated terminals at Chennai airport at a cost of Rs 2,467.
The total built-up area of the proposed terminal building, including the present proposal measuring 1,97,000 sqm, shall be 3,36,000 sqm with an annual capacity to handle 35 million passengers per annum.
The new terminal building incorporates green building features to achieve GRIHA-4 Star rating. The building would cater to the requirement of passenger growth till 2026-27, said a PIB press release.
The phase 2 modernisation work of Chennai airport which is underway include demolition and reconstruction of old domestic terminal (T2), demolition and reconstruction of old international terminal (T3), reconstruction of airside corridor for seamless integration, interface for a tunnel at new terminal to connect it to a proposed satellite terminal that will be built at a later stage, multi-level car parks, integrated common user cargo complex after demolishing the old unused terminal at Meenambakkam, development of bays for freighter aircraft.
