Civil Aviation: Future Fantastic

Imagine taking A flight out of a major city without having to commute to the airport in your own conveyance or a public transport like a bus or a cab, as you have done all along. Imagine going to a designated spot in the city and checking into a comfortable pod or a modern coach, just like the modern-day metro rail coach. Of course, the big difference will be that within such a pod/coach you can drop off your luggage while a machine scans your biometric details. As the coach or the pod approaches the airport, it branches off and takes the passengers directly to the shopping-cum-boarding area designated for a particular flight from where they can walk a short distance to board the aircraft. The baggage would have already reached the aircraft.

This is not science fiction or a scene from a Sci-Fi movie. This is the future of civil aviation as planned by some of the leading world airports like Dubai, London, Tokyo and others.

Already, at major airports like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Frankfurt, London, Moscow, Tokyo, Miami, Sydney and several others, passengers are increasingly not required to carry their passports as a proof of identity or a boarding pass or stand through long lines for security checks, etc. In fact, re-imagining air travel like the scenario described above is in the works in cities like Dubai.

Of course, over the next 10-15 years, some airports across the world would have completely moved to a hassle-free system with world-class facilities like automated baggage collection and tracking, seamless boarding using face recognition and biometrics and paperless travel. And there will be airports that would be upgrading their look and feel to bring them on par with their counterparts in cities like Singapore.
