Mumbai: Domestic and international flights to and from Mumbai airport will be delayed for at least the next 15 days as the airlines’ claim that runway equipment upgradation activity is being undertaken.
Mumbai airport, the second busiest airport in the country, handles more than 950 flights daily. More than 14,000 flights would be handled by the Mumbai airport over the upcoming fortnight. However, the precise effect on these flights cannot be anticipated now, said airport officials.
The officials added that the Airport Authority of India (AAI) is upgrading the Instrument Landing System (ILS) that helps pilots during landing at the airport. A notice to airmen (NOTAM) about the work on ILS was issued to all the airlines.
At least one flight was cancelled on Friday while several flights were delayed by more than half an hour on Thursday and Friday. Many passengers took to social media to express their anguish over the delays.
Additionally, the main runway was also shut for around two hours between 9.53 am and 11.49 am due to strong winds on Friday. The operations were shifted to the secondary runway at the time, informed officials.
