Gold, foreign currencies seized from passengers at Chennai airport

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai airport detected four cases of gold smuggling and one case of smuggling of foreign currency this week.
On Thursday, two woman passengers -- Jyoti 44, and Vairambal, 65, of Madurai who had arrived here from Kuala Lumpur in a Batik Air flight -- brought 600 grams jewellery , valued at Rs 18 lakhs each (eight gold coins tied in chain, four kadas and one chain of 22K) totally weighing 1.2 KG and valued at Rs. 36 lakh.
They were intercepted at the exit of arrival hall and as they had not declared the jewellery, it was seized.
Shamirul Hakh, 39, of Kerala, who arrived here in an IndiGo flight from Dubai, brought 133 grams of gold worth Rs 4 lakh mixed in rubbery spread concealed in undergarments worn by him. The same was seized under the Customs Act.
On Tuesday, while rummaging the IndiGo Airlines flight 6E 052, which arrived from Singapore and had a domestic leg, the officers found a cap pasted on the cylindrical pipe. When the cap was pulled from the cylindrical pipe, a lengthy packet wrapped with brown colour adhesive tape tied with a thread was recovered. When it was cut, it had four gold cut bits among which two were with markings “1 kilo fine gold & argor” and two without markings were recovered. Gold weighing 799 grams of 24 K purity and valued at Rs 25 lakh was seized.
In another case on same day, Suseema Santhi Edirisinghe, 46, who is Sri Lankan passport holder, arrived from Colombo in an IndiGo Airlines flight. She was intercepted at the exit of the Arrival Hal. When searched, one gold ingot weighing 72 grams, one gold necklace weighing 16.4 grams and four of small gold cut chains were recovered. The jewellery totally weighed 111 grams and was worth Rs 3 lakh.
