Mangaluru: Personnel from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Wednesday seized 2.1 kg gold worth Rs. 66.67 lakh from an aircraft at the international airport here.
DRI Deputy Director Vinayak Bhat in a release here said that officials rushed to the airport on Wednesday morning upon receipt of specific intelligence report that certain unscrupulous elements were attempting to smuggle huge quantities of gold of foreign origin into the country.
They conducted a thorough check of the aircraft under suspicion, which happened to arrive at the airport as Flight No SG 479, the SpiceJet flight operating from Mumbai to Mangaluru. Prior to this journey, the aircraft was deployed on an international run between Dubai and Mumbai as SG14.
During an intensive search operation conducted with the assistance of technicians of SpiceJet, officers on suspicion opened the oxygen mask panel on the top ceiling of the aircraft’s front toilet and found gold bars wrapped in a socks, hidden inside the panel.
