Gold worth Rs 78.77 lakh seized from Mumbai International Airport

Mumbai: An Air India staffer has been arrested at the Mumbai International Airport by the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs while he was allegedly trying to smuggle 2.7 kilograms of gold worth Rs 78.77 lakh by concealing it in his shoes on Friday.

The gold was handed over to him by an AI passenger, Anwar Ali Mogral (39), and the staffer was supposed to pass it over to Salim Inamdar outside the airport.

According to the AIU official, the gold was brought by Mogral and in a bid to get it smuggled swiftly, the staffer Arshad Khan was asked to deliver it outside the airport to Inamdar. While Mogral arrived from Dubai in an Air India flight with 2 gold bars (weighing one kg each) and 6 gold strips, he handed them over to Khan. Official suspected foul play when the search was conducted. "During the search, we recovered the gold from his shoes. On questioning him further, he revealed the names of Mogral and Inamdar," said an AIU official.
