Chandigarh: Staking claim over the old building of the Chandigarh airport for use of military operations, the ministry of defence (MOD) has sent a proposal to the Union ministry of civil aviation for approval. According to the ministry, the tarmac (apron or parking area near the terminal) of the old building is the property of the Indian Air Force (IAF), thus it would be difficult for any other authority to utilize the building for any purpose. Built in 2011 with Rs 100 crore, the building is lying unused after the operation of commercial flights was shifted to the Chandigarh international airport (Mohali side) in October 2015.
Air Commodore S Srinivasan, Air Officer Commanding (AOC) of 12 Wing IAF station, Chandigarh, said the MOD has already written to the civil aviation ministry for handing over the non-functional and old building to the IAF.
‘Old airport to be used for logistics, troop movement’
Srinivasan said, “We will use the building for air logistics, movements of troops from the IAF station to other places, disaster management activities and to meet contingencies during wartime.”
The AOC also clarified that since the tarmac of the old airport area is the property of IAF, it would be difficult for anybody else to use the area. The old building having a capacity to accommodate around 2,500 passengers is almost in new shape and was used for domestic operations until the operations of commercial flights were shifted to the new international terminal. When the authorities were being criticised for causing undue loss by nonutilizing the building, the centre had come up with several proposals.
