Indian domestic air travel has grown in double digits for 44 months in a row: IATA

New Delhi:  In a record, domestic air travel in India has grown in double digits for the 44th consecutive month. According to International Air Transport Association (IATA), domestic air travel in India in April 2018 was 26.4% higher than in same month last year — making it the 44th month of record growth — with “passenger demand continuing to be supported by a combination of strong economic and network expansion” here.
On a global basis, demand for domestic air travel grew 8.5% this April compared to April 2017, “propelled by double-digit annual growth in India and China.” China recorded 15.5% growth in April 2018, over same month last year. This was followed by Russia and Brazil at 6.7% each, and then Japan and US at 5.3% each.
However, IATA has warned that rising oil prices that may see fares rising could affect passenger growth globally. “Demand for air transport continues to be above the long-term trend. However, increases in airline cost inputs, most notably fuel prices, means that we are unlikely to see increased stimulation from lower fares in 2018, compared to previous years,” IATA DG and CEO Alexandre de Juniac said.
