Man held at airport with 1 kg gold

New Delhi: A man was arrested at the Delhi airport on Wednesday by Customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country about 1 kg of gold by hiding it in his rectum.

The accused was intercepted after he arrived from Bangkok.

“A detailed personal and baggage search of the passenger resulted in recovery of 998 grams of gold, equivalent to ?31.04 lakh, which the passenger had concealed inside his rectum,” a statement issued by the Customs Department said on Thursday.

During interrogation, he admitted that he had smuggled 3 kg of gold, valued at approximately ?93 lakh, during past visits, the Customs Department said.

“The passenger has been involved in illegal clearance of gold collectively weighing 3.9 kg, valued at approximately ?1.2 crore,” it said.
