Modern infra at airport

Bhubaneswar: The areas surrounding Biju Patnaik International Airport will see an overall development with the housing and urban development department approving the master plan submitted by the airport authorities.

According to the plan, about 54 acres of the airport area will be developed. It includes expansion and beautification projects as well. The Bhubaneswar Development Authority has also amended its comprehensive development plan for the purpose.

Several projects will be taken up in various areas located opposite the domestic terminal near the car parking area. Sources said a three-star hotel, shopping mall and a 4,000-seat convention centre would also be developed in the area.
The authorities have also prepared a blueprint for the third terminal at the city airport, which will have advanced facilities. Sources said it would be constructed over 58,000 square metres with an annual capacity of six millions passengers.

Earlier, the development body had opposed the airport authorities' decision to construct the three-star hotel near the domestic terminal, because the comprehensive development plan was not amended at that time. The development body had then approached the general administration and got a stay order.

"The airport authorities had not taken any permission and floated a tender for the hotel project. That's why, we had opposed the move. There is a process, and now that the master plan is approved, we have amended our comprehensive development plan. They are now allowed to take up the projects," said a development body official.
