Amritsar: The passenger traffic at Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport has achieved a remarkable growth of 48.1 per cent in 2017-2018 financial year.
Amritsar Vikas Manch (NGO) additional secretary Yogesh Kamra said the airport recorded 23.2 lakh passengers in 2017-18 as against 15.6 lakh passengers in 2016-2017.
As per the recent annual traffic report released by the Airport Authority of India (AAI), the local airport is at the top in terms of passenger traffic growth amongst 34 international airports in the country.
This phenomenal growth in both domestic and international passenger traffic is a clear indicator of its future potential, he said, adding that the city airport would likely to handle more than 30 lakh passengers during 2018-19, if the current growth in passenger traffic is any indication.
He felt that connectivity of the airport to the western countries has not yet been facilitated by the Union government due to absence of bilateral air service agreements for the Amritsar airport.
It may be noted that the other Tier-II International airports like Jaipur, Lucknow, Trichy, Kochi, Kozhikode, Calicut and Mangalore have been allowed to have flights from Emirates, Etihad, FlyDubai, Oman Air, Gulf Air, Saudia and Kuwait Air.
These airlines connect seamlessly to Europe, USA, Canada, Middle East and other countries via transit hubs in their respective country. However, the Amritsar airport remains the only exception.
