50 acres for Navy to build additional runway can ease host of problems

Visakhapatnam:  Several travellers’ associations are requesting the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) to allot 50 acres of land to the Navy for building an additional runway at the city airport, parallel to the existing tarmac.
The additional runway can then be used by the Navy for dedicated military operations without hurting commercial operations at the airport.
The Navy had proposed to halt commercial operations at the city airport for five hours a day to conduct sorties. Following an uproar from airlines and travellers’ associations, the Navy later agreed to bring down the slots to three hours a day from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm daily. This slot would have badly hit commercial operations at the airport, with eight direct flights and several other indirect flights being affected as a result.
“Each flight would have 150 passengers on an average and all these eight flights will have 1,200 passengers flying out of the airport and another 1,200 passengers flying in. This would mean 2,400 passengers a day and around 9 lakh passengers per year getting affected due to these slots,” said Vizag Development Council president O Naresh Kumar said.
