Air Deccan suspends Maharashtra operations citing pilot-aircraft crunch

Nashik: Air Deccan, the private airline which started its Maharashtra operations in December last year under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), has suspended its services following scarcity of pilots and aircrafts.
The private airline was providing air services linking Nashik, Kolhapur and Jalgaon with Mumbai and Nashik with Pune. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has taken serious note of the issue and has slapped a show-cause notice to Air Deccan for suspending its operations in Maharashtra.
Confirming the development, executive director (RCS) of AAI G K Chaukiyal told TOI that Air Deccan has been asked to explain why it stopped the air services in Maharashtra.
"The Union government has not paid the airline any subsidy so far that it is entitled for under the RCS for its erratic services ever since they started the operations in Maharashtra," Chaukiyal said.
According to him, Air Deccan officials have assured the AAI to re-start its Maharashtra operations from next month. "Air Deccan authorities told us that they were forced to suspend the operations as they are facing scarcity of pilots and aircrafts. They are scouting for foreign pilots as there is a scarcity of Indian pilots and under the rules the foreign pilots needs licences from government agencies to fly aircrafts in India," he added.
