Hyderabad: Alleged frauds involving carrier AirAsia India and others like the Nirav Modi case are legacy issues from the previous dispensations that the BJP-led NDA government is currently busy cleaning up, IT and law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday.
The airline, a joint venture between the Tatas and Malaysia’s AirAsia Berhad, is under the scanner of the CBI for company officials allegedly trying to manipulate policies through corrupt means to get an international flying licence.
In the AirAsia case, information with CBI supposedly suggests that the seeds of conspiracy to get the 5/20 rule amended were sown during second term (2009-14) of the Congress-led UPA government. AirAsia was emboldened by the approvals given by the then FIPB despite irregularities in its application.
Holding the UPA government responsible for the bank frauds now being “unearthed,” Prasad said, “It is all the legacy of the government led by previous dispensations. What we are doing is cleaning the dirt. Even the latest AirAsia case is a legacy.” The minister said no bank has suffered non-performing assets (NPAs) during the NDA regime.

“All banking frauds are being unearthed, whether it is Vijay Mallya or Nirav Modi. About Rs 10,000-crore properties of Nirav Modi were seized.”
In this context, the BJP leader accused former finance minister P Chidambaram of providing special facilities to several diamond firms including Mehul Choksi’s Gitanjali just a day before his tenure. “That is their (Congress) record; we are doing our best to clean up the system.”
