Airport hill cutting ops cancelled after downpour

Navi Mumbai: The season’s heaviest rainfall so far in the last 24 hours disrupted Ulwe hill blasting operations for the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) project on Monday. Blasting of the hill could not be carried out neither in the 1pm to 2pm slot nor between 5pm and 6pm.
Ulwe node received 238mm rainfall in the 24 hours from Sunday 4pm, Cidco officials said. Cidco monitors rainfall in the various nodes under its jurisdiction. The hill operations had to stop as water entered into the holes drilled at the blasting site. The rain water had to be first drained out before explosives could be placed, said sources associated with the hill operations.
The high flood level is 4.5m and the airport will be developed at a height of 8m. Currently, the hill is being cut and levelled at 5.5m level. Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) will level it further by 2.5m to build the runway and other infra for the airport.
Cidco-appointed Central Water and Power Research Station, Pune, a central government body will study the level of the airport from the mean sea level, rise in the water level and amount of rainfall.
