Hyderabad: The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) situated in Vishakapatnam has come up with a proposal to restrict the movement of civilian passenger and cargo flights at Vizag airport, reserving the prime time slots for its safety and training sessions. The decision is said to have taken at the Military – Civil coordination committee meeting on May 2, triggering protests from cross sections of the airport users including industrialists who say their businesses would be hit by the restrictions.
It was proposed to reserve the military slots between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm and 3:00pm to 5:00 pm from Monday to Friday.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu took up the issue with Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday. He requested her not to implement the proposed restrictions, at least till the new Greenfield airport proposed to be built on 2,500 acres at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district, about 45 km from the Vizag airport, gets ready.
“Andhra Pradesh has been witnessing a significant growth in the passenger air traffic over the past four years. During the period, passenger traffic at AP airports has significantly increased from 1.3 million in 2014 to 4.1 million in 2018. Vizag is the biggest among airports in Andhra Pradesh handling 60 per cent of the passenger air traffic,” CM Naidu said in his letter.
