Chennai airport to get a robotic touch soon

Chennai: For the first time, Chennai airport will soon get humanoid robots that will guide passengers and offer assistance with queries.

For a start, there will be three robots in Chennai airport - one each for domestic arrival, domestic departure and international departure.
Officials of Airports Authority of India (AAI) said they have began discussions with a few Indian companies to buy these robots in a few months.

“We have asked for a few specifications; once these companies get back to us for the next discussion, we will know when it can be installed. We want to have these on a trial basis first and see how useful they are. If passengers like it, then we will have more of them in our airport,” an official said. Officials said, it is not clear yet on how much AAI is likely to spend for these three robots.

From information on flight status to enquiries about which gate to board from, the robots will be able to help passengers with anything and everything, he added. “We haven’t decided if it should be positioned in one place or allowed to be walking around in their terminal. We will look at the security aspect and take a call on that issue,” he said.
