Coimbatore airport to get 2 aerobridges in October

Coimbatore: Two aerobridges that are expected to reach the city airport in October will be added to the departure section, making it easy for wheelchair-bound passengers to board and disembark.
After they are installed, the facility will have four aerobridges. Two of them installed last year are not used and wheelchair-bound passengers are currently carried up the stairs to the aircraft.
Work has begun to install the aerobridges in October, before the festive season, airport director S Mahalingam said. “Once we have four aerobridges in the departure section, almost all the flights will be able to use them,” he told TOI.
The enclosed, movable connector that extends from airport terminal gate to an airplane allow passengers board and disembark without going outside or being exposed to the elements. Senior citizens and those who find it difficult to climb steps prefer it.
It is critical for wheelchair-bound patients to be able to get wheeled directly into the aircraft, said Anand Selvaraj, co-ordinator at Swarga Foundation. “Otherwise, we have to be carried up the stairs and into the aircraft by the airline staff, which many find uncomfortable,” he said.
