Flights to be rescheduled for airport taxiway work

Chennai: Two international flights may have to be rescheduled and a majority of domestic flights will have to use the second runway as Airports Authority of India (AAI) takes up maintenance work on the main runway.
Four rapid exit taxiways have been under construction, and the work to link them to the main runway will begin next month. For this, the runway will have to remain closed during daytime, for about nine months.
The runway will be closed in two phases - from 12.30pm to 8pm in July and August, and from 10am to 6pm from September.
The daily departure of a Saudia Airlines flight which usually takes off at 12.30pm has been advanced to 11.15am; an Air India flight and a Cathay Pacific flight will also be rescheduled.
AAI is making four rapid exit taxiways for use by narrow-body planes and a parallel taxiway on the northern side of the main runway.

The main runway now has a rapid exit taxiway which can be used by wide-body planes operated on international sectors. Such taxiways enable more landings and take-offs.
