Gold bars under plane seat

Calcutta: Four gold bars worth Rs 16.44 lakh were found under a seat of an aircraft that arrived in Calcutta from Bangkok on Monday evening.
The passenger who had booked seat 18F for the next leg of the flight to Mumbai via Nagpur had cancelled at the last minute, customs officials said.
The air intelligence unit of customs detected an unusual object in a hollow structural pipe on IndiGo's 6E-76 flight during routine check."The object was wrapped in brown adhesive tape and tied to the pipe with a black string," said a customs official. On removing the tape, four gold bars weighing 530.3 grams were revealed.
"We checked the passenger list and found seat 18F empty for the domestic leg of the flight. The passenger had cancelled possibly after hearing about the search," a customs official said.
