Hindustan Aeronautics Limited red-faced as aircraft under production crashes

A day after the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) gifted a Dornier Do 288 aircraft to Seychelles, it was major embarrassment for the Bengaluru-headquartered defence public sector undertaking on Wednesday as for the first time, an under-production aircraft crashed.
A Su 30 MkI, produced at HAL Nashik, crashed during a sortie in local flying area of Ozar (Nashik) Airport. “The aircraft which was on testing sortie crashed. It is the first time a production version of an aircraft belonging to HAL met with an accident,” HAL sources told Bangalore Mirror. The production version of the Su 30 MkI was piloted by Wg Cdr Prashant Nair accompanied by Sqn Ldr L Biswal (Flight Test Engineer).
HAL said that both pilots ejected safely. The pilots were on deputation from the Indian Air Force to HAL and were involved in flight testing activities of the Su 30 MkI.
Wg Cdr Nair had also piloted the maiden flight of first Su-30 MkI with BrahMos missile. As the aircraft was still under production, HAL has ordered a Board of Investigation to find out the exact cause.“If an IAF aircraft was involved in a crash then the norm is that a Court of Inquiry is ordered by the airforce. But in this case the aircraft was a production version a Board of Investigation has been ordered to find out the exact cause by HAL,” said sources.
