Kancheepuram farmers oppose acquisition of land for airport near Cheyyur, Chennai-Salem green corridor

Chennai: Farmers in Kancheepuram district have opposed the Tamil Nadu government’s move to acquire agricultural land for two major infrastructure projects.
Unlike rest of the state, it is a double dilemma in Kancheepuram as authorities need to source land for an international airport and for the Chennai-Salem green corridor, which starts at Mannivakkam village in the district.
Representatives of farmers registered their objection to Kancheepuram district collector P Ponniah at the farmers grievance meeting on Friday.
K Nehru, Kancheepuram district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, said the representatives of four villages in Cheyyur taluk that may house the city's second airport refused to give up their agriculture land for the purpose.
"A representative from each of the village clearly told the collector that their land should not be acquired for the proposed airport," said Nehru, who participated in the meeting in Kancheepuram.
