Karaikal MLAs to pursue greenfield airport project

Karaikal: Rising above party affiliations, a majority of Karaikal MLAs appear to be on the same page on the greenfield airport project.

The MLAs have planned to raise the issue during the Assembly session and urge the Puducherry Government to facilitate completion of the project, which is witnessing time overrun.

The project was originally planned for initiation this month, but construction of the runway is getting delayed due to problems in acquisition of land that includes swathes of fertile stretches.

According to the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, the project — promoted by Karaikal Airport Private Limited (KAPL) and overseen by Super Airport Infrastructure India Pvt Ltd (SAIIPL) — will be completed by year-end. KAPL had intended to construct the runway on a 60-acre portion of the 350 acres it had acquired. But it could not purchase 15 out of the 60 acres on which the runway was planned.

“If not for the choice of the particular site that includes a chunk of fertile land, the project would have witnessed swift progress,” A. Geetha, MLA of Neravy T.R. Pattinam segment, said. “Nevertheless, the issue will be raised in the Assembly.”

Representatives of Thirunallar, Karaikal North and Karaikal South also hold the same view, sources said.
