Weather weighed on pilots, neither was keen to fly

Marya Zuberi, 47, co-pilot of the plane that crashed in Ghatkopar, was certain she would return home early on Thursday as the weather was not conducive to fly. This was what she said while leaving her Mira Road home early in the morning for work, said her husband Prabhat Kathuria. Relatives of pilot Pradeep Rajput, who had come from Delhi especially for the test flight, too said he was not keen on flying in bad weather.
“We don’t know why they took the test flight after all. We don’t know if the company (U Y Aviation) pressured them into flying. From what she (Zuberi) told me on Wednesday night, the pilot too was not in favour of flying in bad weather,” said Kathuria, who works in Delhi and had come visiting on Wednesday. He rued that the family was not informed about the crash till they found out from the television channels.
The couple, married for the past 16 years, last spoke around 9.30am. “She asked me if I have had breakfast. She was extremely loving and caring. We were casually chatting after she reached the airport,” he said. Zuberi, a native of Allahabad, had over 1,000 hours of flying time. “Both the pilots were competent. The company should be held accountable for the deaths today,” said Kathuria.

Kulvinder Chohan, a relative of Captain Pradeep Rajput, said he wasn’t confident about flying on Thursday. “He wasn’t fond of test flights. We hear that he wasn’t very willing to fly on Thursday due to the weather,” he said. Rajput, a resident of Delhi, had a flying experience of over 20 years and had arrived in the city on Thursday morning for the test flight.

Police surgeon Patil said all autopsies were carried out by 9pm. He added that all deaths were caused by multiple fractures (polytrauma) and burns. None of the five bodies were handed over to the families, despite at least two families identifying the deceased. The police said the bodies would be handed over only after the DNA test reports have arrived since all the bodies were charred beyond recognition.
