Surat gets air connection to five more destinations

Surat: IndiGo airline has announced commencement of its flight services from Surat, its 56th destination, from August 16.
The country’s largest low-cost airline will operate new flights to and from Surat connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Jaipur, respectively. In the later stage, the airline may connect to Kolkata, Goa and Varanasi. According to IndiGo’s official announcement, flights between Surat and Jaipur will be operated thrice a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while flights between Surat and Bengaluru will operate on all days except Tuesday.
IndiGo will be the fourth airline to operate from Surat. At present, SpiceJet, Air India and AirAsia have been operating flight services to various key destinations, including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Patna from the city.
Chief strategy officer, IndiGo, Willian Boulter, said, “We are pleased to have an opportunity to fly out of Surat starting August. Surat undoubtedly holds immense potential for IndiGo and launching operations to and from the Diamond City is in line with our growth strategy for India market. IndiGo is looking at introducing new flights connecting Surat with Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Jaipur.”
At present, Surat airport handles about 36 flight movements per day to various destinations, operated by SpiceJet, AirAsia and Air India. Flight movement will be between 40 and 45 once IndiGo too commences services from the city in August.
The terminal building will be bursting at its seams starting August with more than 3,500 passengers flying to and from Surat airport. At present, the terminal capacity is for only 250 passengers per hour.
