Mumbai: A week after an Indian national based in Singapore, Prakasham Kannian, was arrested for smuggling more than 100kg of gold, the Customs has busted another gang. The air intelligence unit (AIU) of the Customs arrested two Madagascar nationals and a jeweller from Zaveri Bazaar for their alleged involvement in a smuggling syndicate.
Asource said that the AIU intercepted two Madasgascar nationals Yoguy Rafidison and Rajeev Santilal who arrived in Mumbai on a Jet Airways flight 9W-557 last week. Officials found 62 gold bars weighing 3.6 kg worth Rs 2.1 crore in their baggage.
Santilal and Rafidison, who are related to each other, have admitted to having smuggled gold from Dubai and Mauritius on 26 occasions over the past two years. They said that each time they would come to India with at least 5-7kg gold bars and sell them to Zaveri Bazaar-based jeweller Rahul Devkar.
“Based on their statements, we summoned Devkar and recorded his statement. He admitted to have melted, refined and sold the gold to several customers. He said that the money obtained by selling this gold was transferred to banks at foreign destinations using hawala channels." said an officer.
