New Delhi: Watching flying machines touch down at runways or get airborne is going to be a thing of the past in Delhi. The Safdarjung Airport flyover was one of the last remaining popular spots in the capital to see small planes and chopper operate from there after IGI built a wall along the runway that cut off the view from “jumbo points”.
But with only top VVIP movement happening from Safdarjung Airport, the home ministry has asked the Airports Authority of India to install “view cutters” on the radial facing the runway for security reasons.
Only a handful of top dignitaries like the President, the Prime Minister and the home minister take choppers from this airport and chief ministers of some states, including, Punjab, fly in and out of here in their small planes. Each time a chopper comes in to land or is preparing to take off, a large number of motorists driving on the radial facing the runway (from AIIMS to Safdarjung Tomb side) stop to marvel at the view. Due to the flyover, small planes land from and take off towards the other end of the runway. But choppers can be seen clearly.
“The home ministry told us that there was a need to install view cutters on the flyover side due to security reasons. We took up the matter with NDMC and that work is currently on,” an AAI official said. The iron railings are now in place and, shortly, the view cutters will be installed.
