With unpaid flying allowances in May, Air India pilots say they are 'very stressed'

New Delhi:  Air India pilots, who are yet to be paid their last month’s flying allowance which accounts for almost 70% of their total salary, said they are operating in very stressful conditions that may affect safety. The Southern region of Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPA, union of erstwhile Indian Airlines’ pilots) has issued a list of do’s and don’ts for its members that may lead to flight delays by adhering strictly to all norms. This includes not accepting last-minute pullout for flights, reporting sick if stressed and strictly observing weekly offs.
AI is awaiting fund infusion to restart before it is able to pay flying allowances. The failed divestment bid saw the promised equity infusion to the national carrier from the government being stopped and also some banks recalled a Rs 1,000-crore loan, leaving the Maharaja strapped for funds and in no position to pay its staff in full.
“You are hereby directed to observe the flight safety week in full sprit in interest of safety of crew and passengers as we are ‘presently’ operating in very stressful conditions, due to nonpayment of flying allowance leading to immense financial stress. Physiological stressors lead to emotional factors such as financial worries. Time and again studies have clearly shown that emotional factors are repeatedly present in aircraft accidents,” ICPA (south) said in a letter to its member pilots this Sunday.
