Dip in freight exports prompts officials to woo cargo firms

Pune: Despite a major dip in international cargo exports from Pune airport in the past few months, the authorities are trying to convince some major cargo companies to use the facility in Pune.
“A meeting was held last week between authorities of airport and customs and representatives of cargo companies like Blue Dart and DHL. They were offered help and cooperation to start cargo services from Pune airport. All issues regarding aircraft parking and slots will be looked into. The response has been positive and companies may start their services in a few months, if all goes well,” a source in the customs told TOI.
Officials conceded that there was hardly any cargo export since March. “For some reasons, the whole process has drastically slowed down. While one airline -- the first to start cargo export since the facility became operational on June 16 last year -- has stopped it altogether despite having an international flight connection to Dubai, the same can be said of other airlines as well.
