Dubai flyer lands with Rs 35 lakh gold

Mohali: A woman was caught smuggling gold worth Rs 35.5 lakh from Dubai at the Chandigarh international airport on Monday. Sources in the customs department said Zeenat Khatoon, a resident of Delhi, was carrying 1,164 grams of gold in the form of two thin strips smartly stitched inside the beading of one of her bags. The bag was marked with a cross, said sources.
Sources said after deboarding from the Dubai flight, the passenger attempted to walk through the green channel of the customs department. Suspecting her body language and noticing the cross on the baggage, customs sleuths asked her to declare if she had any restricted or contraband item, specifically gold, in any form. But she replied in the negative.
Her luggage, including the bag with the cross mark, was scanned in the X-ray machine installed at the arrival hall, which showed the presence of gold in the form of a wire, said sources. The bag was emptied and re-scanned, which showed the presence of gold in the cavity of the bag. “Two pieces of wire of white nickel coated gold of 24 karat weighing 1164 grams were recovered. The passenger was arrested, but later released on bail,” sources said
