Environment clearance sought for airport site

Pune: The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) has sought environment clearance to the proposed site for the international airport in Purandar.
A source in the government said the MADC had written to the environment department for environment clearance to the project. It is among the procedures listed for finalizing the site.
MADC was appointed the Special Planning Authority (SPA) for the proposed airport site covering seven villages — Pargaon Memane, Khanvadi, Munjwadi, Ekhatpur, Kumbharvalan, Vanpuri and Udachiwadi. Villagers stated that the environment ministry should assess the project thoroughly because its proposed site had good agricultural produce. “On one hand, the state wants tree plantation. On the other, it wants to build the airport on a site where the villagers have planted several saplings. What about the green cover?” questioned a villager.
