Nationality question puts Sri Lankan native in a fix

Chennai: A writ petition filed in the Madras High Court has brought to light the plight of a 45-year-old woman employed as a waitress in Italy. She was made to shuttle between airports in India and Sri Lanka twice within two days last month due to doubts over her nationality. She has not been allowed to step out of the Anna International airport here since June 24.
Dismissing a writ petition filed by law student, P. Divya, demanding her mother’s release from the custody of immigration officials, Justice T. Raja pointed out that the petitioner’s mother Sayanthi Anandarajah was born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, on December 7, 1973. She was issued a Sri Lankan passport on October 12, 1989, and it expired in 1994.
In the meantime, Ms. Sayanthi came to India as a refugee and got married to an Indian citizen named Premkumar in April 1992. She gave birth to three children, of whom the petitioner was the youngest. During the period of her stay in India, she obtained a voter’s identity card, Aadhaar card and ration card. She also got an Indian passport in 2004.
In 2007, she took up a job as a house help in Italy and visited India once in two years to meet her family. In 2013, she found a job as a waitress at a hotel in Italy and flew down to Chennai on June 23 to attend her eldest daughter’s marriage. However, immigration officials detained her at the airport after suspecting her nationality.
