New Delhi: A body of a stillborn baby was found onboard an Imphal-Guwahati-New Delhi AirAsia flight today. The infant was found "lifeless and abandoned" in one of the plane's lavatories when the aircraft was being prepared for landing, according to a statement released by the airliner.
Police suspect that the infant was delivered in a stillborn condition and AirAsia said that a medical examination conducted by a doctor at the New Delhi airport had confirmed that the baby "had been delivered onboard".
The Delhi Police was informed about the discovery by an AirAsia manager and its officers boarded the aircraft once it landed in the national capital. The baby's mother is believed to have boarded the flight from Guwahati, a police officer said.
AirAsia, in its statement, said that a "suspect" has been held by the police for questioning. "A suspect has been held back by police for further investigation. The suspect was identified on questioning of all female passengers onboard," the statement said.
The police said that the foetus has been sent for post-mortem and the woman has been sent for medical examination.
