Villagers vow mass protest against land acquisition

Pune: The black banners are ready. So are the people of seven villages — Vanpuri, Kumbharvalan, Udachiwadi, Ekhatpur, Munjavadi, Khanavadi and Pargaon Memane — to oppose land acquisition for the Purandar international airport.
The Vimantal Virodhi Sangharsh Samiti has announced “chakka jam (road blockade)” on all the roads leading to the seven villages next week. It will, in turn, affect nearly 40 villages. The samiti members claimed that this would mark the commencement of a series of agitations against the land
acquisition.
A joint meeting of the seven villages would be conducted on Sunday to decide the course of action for the next week, a member of the samiti said.
Pargaon Memane, the village to be largely affected, has seen huge tracts of irrigated land in the past 10 years because of the Purandar lift irrigation water supply. Several farmers took up cultivation of vegetables and fruits.
