Chandigarh: All three points for water to flow out of the are blocked. The main outlet to drain the water to Sukhna choe is choked owing to construction activities. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has flagged these concerns in its report "Future Challenges" to the airport submitted to the Punjab and Haryana high court.
Drain blockage is the biggest worry for the IAF. This because water stagnation increases activity of birds - lethal for flight operations. They gather around these points to forage for insects. The storage of water because of blockade may also damage the runway pavement and in worst case scenario cause flooding. The IAF authorities have pointed out that officials of drainage department (Patiala division) led by subdivisional officer (SDO) Harmail Singh carried out a survey by June 8. "The report highlighted that all outlets leading to the main rain drain outside the airfield are blocked due to unauthorized construction and non clearance of the drains. The survey team ruled out the possibility of rerouting the outlets and connecting it with international airport main drainage due to ground level
differences," the IAF report said.
