Few flights were delayed despite VVIP movement

Chennai: Despite heavy VIP movement, right from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to other national leaders, in the city after DMK leader M Karunanidhi's death on Tuesday, the flight operations were not affected in a big way at the airport. Only two flights had to be kept on hold for a while after 10am soon after Modi's aircraft touched down.
A Jet Airways flight from Mumbai and a Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur were kept on hold and touched down after a delay of 20minutes between 10.30am and 11.30am. The Prime Minister landed at the airport in a special flight and boarded a helicopter to reach the city.
Sources said the airport had stopped the practice of telling all flights to be on hold to allow VIP movements. "Only priority for landing is given to VIP flights as other flights are allowed to fly in as per schedule. We could prepare well as the PM's and other VIP movement schedule was provided to us well in advance," said an official.
