Vijayawada: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is gearing to speed-up the runway expansion works of the Gannavaram airport as various departments are ready to handover the required land soon. Officials who proposed to expand the existing runway from 2,286 metres to 3,360 metres are heading to complete works with an estimated cost of Rs 150 crores.
The Gannavaram Airport witnessed a huge growth in terms of Air traffic and cargo since the two states bifurcated in 2014. But it has been eventually marred with slow pace works of runway expansion which hampered the budding-business The present runway has been unable to handle huge aircraft and further the officials failed to complete the expansion works with problems in land acquisition.
Farmers and flat holders in VGTM Urban Development Authority approved layouts in Allapuram, Ajjapuram but other nearby villages denied to give their lands under the land pooling and demanded land to land replacement.
