‘Introduce at least one freight aircraft’

Coimbatore: The city airport has limitations when it comes to cargo handling. For instance, what’s on offer is belly cargo - it sends goods only in passenger flights, subject to space and weight availability. Otherwise, it relies on bonded cargo operations - the cargo is sent to Kochi, Bengaluru or Chennai airports and flown to their destinations from there. Industrialists and airport officials say cargo operations could achieve the next stage of growth only if either the city is connected to more international and domestic destinations, or if exclusive freight aircrafts are introduced.
“At least one freight aircraft to a major transit destination like Dubai is enough,” said a cargo department official, who didn’t want to be named. “Or they can add one small freight aircraft, which can act as a feeder service, dropping off cargo in other cargo hubs like Mumbai or Chennai. This way, cargo operations will become more efficient, a lot faster and can start expanding faster.”
Industrialists are also of the opinion that a freight aircraft to any crucial destination abroad or Chennai would make a big difference. “Garment exporters, who regularly send their products to Europe and the US will definitely use cargo services more if they introduce a freight aircraft,” said D Nandhakumar, director of Kongu Global Forum. “A lot of spare part and mold manufacturers will also use the service more. The airport will definitely get more business.”
