Jewar farmers in stir mode over move to acquire land for Airport

Bhatta Parsaul, which saw a massive protest by farmers over forcible land acquisition in 2011, is just a 15-minute drive from Kalupura village which is to be subsumed by the proposed Jewar airport. “If the UP government wants another Bhatta Parsaul here,” said an angry farmer Rakesh Kumar in Kalupura, “farmers are ready… tanashahi nahi chalegi(dictatorship won’t be tolerated).”

Tension is simmering in the eight villages of Jewar where the state government plans to acquire more than 3,000 hectares of land belonging to 9,167 farmers for building the airport. Many farmers converged for a panchayat in Kalupura on Sunday and alleged that the Yogi Adityanath government was trying to acquire land under Section 2 (1) of Land Acquisition Act without their consent, after it had failed to obtain consent of 70% farmers as per Section 2(2).
ET had reported the move first on Saturday, leading to former CM Akhilesh Yadav tweeting that the UP government wanted to forcibly acquire the land. “We will protest till our last breath. This airport will not be built like this – by force,” warned Rakesh Kumar, saying farmers were in touch with Akhilesh Yadav and RLD’s Jayant Chaudhary.
