Kerala floods: Centre promises to rein in airline firms over airfare as Cochin airport remains shut

Thiruvananthapuram: Union civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu promised the state government that Centre will ensure that the airline companies do not charge heftily from passengers travelling to Gulf countries from other airports, in the wake of shut-down of Cochin International Airport due to floods.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan had brought the matter to the attention of the Centre. The Union civil aviation ministry has informed the state government that the Centre has instructed the airline companies that the fares should be capped at the rates which were existing prior to the shutdown of Kochi airport. The ministry also assured the chief minister that the airfares from Thiruvananthapuram to New Delhi will be capped at Rs 10,000, and the fares to other cities from Thiruvananthapuram will be reduced proportionately.
In addition, the issues in rail connectivity between northern districts and the state capital has reflected in the air sector. The only flight connecting Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikode daily, operated by Air India Express, has seen at least four-fold increase in the rates for Saturday and Sunday. Air India Express is operating a flight from the capital to Kozhikode in the morning, while it returns at night.
