Main runway closure: Airlines take steps to tide over probable delays

Chennai: Airlines have tweaked boarding timings and pilots have started to carry more fuel to tide over probable delays after Airports Authority of India (AAI) has started to close the main runway daily for five hours from 12.30pm for taxiway work. The runway will be closed daily for six months.
Though the airport has been able to handle domestic flights on secondary runway without considerable delays and disruptions since Sunday, the flight punctuality may take a hit till the runway closure is on.

Owing to change in runway, airlines' officials are taking steps to prevent things from affecting their schedule. They have started to board passenges early, sometimes before check-in counter closes 45 minutes before departure. This is to ensure that flight can be pushed back early to make up for the delay in taxiing to reach the take-off point of the second runway.

"If the departure is from GST road-end of the second runway, planes can reach take-off point quickly. But if the take-off point is on Manapakkam-end of the runway, then it's accessible only after a 10 to 15-minute taxiing," said an official.
