Man held with smuggled Rs 3 cr gold at Pune airport

The Pune customs and directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) officials caught a man for hiding 10 kg gold in a lavatory at Pune airport. The man managed to trick officials at the Dubai International Airport, from where he succeeded to fly the precious metal to Pune on a Spice Jet flight on Thursday.
The officials recovered as many as 86 gold biscuits and gold in various other forms. The joint operation also included assistance from the Pune regional unit (PRU). Sources said that the man, whose identity is not yet disclosed, managed to fly in gold biscuits concealed in mobile phone pouches and covers. Soon, a rummage was carried out in various sections of the airport that were inbound for Dubai-related passengers.
The smuggled gold weighing 10.175 kg is valued at Rs 3,09,34,675 in the Indian market. It was seized by the DRI under reasonable belief that the same was attempted to be smuggled in India and hence liable for confiscation under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, said Bharat Navale, deputy commissioner, customs, Pune airport.
