Now, IndiGo grounds brand new A-320 Neo following Pratt engine trouble

New Delhi: Now, even brand new Pratt and Whitney (PW) engines powering the Airbus A-320 Neo are going kaput, requiring replacement. IndiGo has grounded a mint fresh A-320 Neo (new engine option) after flying it barely 50 hours over a week following a snag in one of the engines.

The aircraft (VT-IVQ) had flown in from Airbus assembly line in Toulouse, France, to Delhi on July 31. From around August 3, IndiGo started using it for regular commercial flights. "This aircraft did a Indore-Bangalore flight as 6E 708 on August 10. One of the two engines on the Neo suffered snags and reportedly had 'oil/magnetic chips found' — a very common — problem while flying to Bangalore. The plane landed safely at its destination but had to be grounded," said a source.

"IndiGo took special permission from DGCA to fly this aircraft to Delhi as a ferry flight (without passengers) for engine replacement. In terms of engine life, this is perhaps one of the shortest ones as an airline has had to replace a faulty engine after flying the plane for less than 50 hours in about a week," source said.
