Second airport to open in Goa: more options, easy travel

A second international airport is on the cards for Goa. The upcoming Mopa Airport will be a greenfield airport, and will handle approximately 30 million passengers, as per a statement by Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister, Goa.

In a written reply to MLA Nilesh Cabral, the Chief Minister said that this first phase of the project will cost INR 1,900 crore. This airport in north Goa will be built in four phases, and will handle both passenger and cargo.

Mopa is located in Goa’s Pernem region, and is in the north side. It is going to serve as the second airport, after Goa’s main airport, Dabolim Airport. The new airport will help bring in more tourists to the state, and the Dabolim Airport won’t have to take in too much of the passenger pressure. In 2016, Goa witnessed a 19.5 percent growth in tourist footfalls (63.31 lakh tourists). Then in 2017, that percentage increased to 22.98, with a total footfall of 77.85 lakh tourists. So, with such increasing numbers, Goa could do much better with the second airport.
