UDAN deadline rap on airline

Calcutta: The civil aviation ministry has given an ultimatum to Air Deccan, which has missed multiple deadlines to start low-cost flights from Calcutta to 11 places in the east and the Northeast under the regional connectivity scheme, to start the flights within "a month or so".

The airline that pioneered low-cost flying in India had won bids to fly to Andal, Burnpur, Rourkela, Jamshedpur, Bagdogra, Cooch Behar, Agartala, Dimapur, Silchar, Shillong and Aizawl under the scheme UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik). The flight between Calcutta and Jamshedpur was to have started in September last year. None of the flights has taken off.

"They have been given an ultimatum. They have to step up or the routes would be cancelled," Guruprasad Mohapatra, chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), said in Calcutta on Saturday. He could not give a specific deadline but said it would be "a month or so".
