Chennai: Airports Authority of India (AAI) has decided to set up a simulator to train people to drive inside the airfield at Chennai airport.
The move is being speeded up after Tuesday’s incident in which a plane which was coming in to land had to abort the plan and go around after spotting a vehicle on runway.
There were also a few runway and taxiway incursions and speed violations earlier.
All staff and workers who have to drive vehicles like cars, vans, shuttle buses for passengers and crew, tow vehicles and pushback vehicles and others require an airfield driving permit in addition to the conventional driving licence. The permit now is being issued after a class in which rules, speed restrictions, no-go zones and others are explained.
However, incidents, especially the one that happened on Tuesday, showed that the existing training was not enough to ensure safety.
