Bullish IndiGo to ramp up fleet to 200 planes by the end of this year

Hyderabad: Low cost carrier IndiGo will be ramping up its fleet from 181 aircraft to 200 by the end of this year as the airline scales up rapidly, IndiGo designate chief executive officer (CEO) Gregory Taylor said here on Saturday.

He pointed out that around two years ago the no frills carrier had just 50-60 airplanes in its fleet. At present IndiGo, which is the country’s largest carrier with nearly 42% market share, has a fleet of 45 new generation A320 NEOs, 126 A320 CEOs and 10 ATRs. It operates flights to 57 destinations – 48 domestic and nine international.

Delivering the keynote address at the city-based premier B School, Indian School of Business (ISB) Leadership Summit 2018, Taylor said, “India is the most exciting country right now for the world of aviation. I spent most of my career in the US, where the population is around 330 million and there are 5,000 airplanes serving commercial transportation… In India, there are 1.2 billion people and if you add all the airlines including Indigo, there are just 500-600 airplanes. So, we have essentially one-tenth the number of planes (as compared to the US) serving about four times the population. So, the growth opportunity for aviation is spectacular,” he said.
